Debutants Charlotte and Erin Bush helped boost York Acorn Running Club to a dominant display in the opening fixture of the 2025 York and District Road League season at Tadcaster while Dom Carter staked a strong claim to become the new men’s champion.
The sisters from Tamworth delivered gold and bronze medals with 10k times of 38:43 for Charlotte – who was 28th overall – and 40:28 for Erin in the ladies’ senior stakes as 482 runners endured a sweltering start to the campaign on Tuesday evening. Rose Mather of York Knavesmire Harriers was second with her 38:51 while veteran-35 category winner Emma Winter from Selby Striders just missed the podium with 40:37.
York Postal Harriers star Carter – the second senior male overall in the 2024 series – has regularly threatened to top the timecharts on the Tadcaster course, which sees competitors race from the grammar school to reach Bramham before heading home underneath the A64 and up Headley Short Hill.
This time around, despite some late April heat but in the absence of reigning champion Joe Firth, Carter stormed to first place in a 33:37 – almost 90 seconds clear of Knavesmire’s Dave Smithers (35:05) and Tadcaster Harriers hopeful Joe Slater with his 35:15.
Acorn’s Chris Poulton took fifth place for the men with a 35:46 and with it first place in the vet-40 stakes ahead of Darren Tomlinson and Stephen Walker of Tadcaster. Smithers – improving to second overall here from seventh last year – is the current vet-50 champion and remains the man to beat, with Ian Martin (Vale of York Athletic Community) and Brendan Anglim (Easingwold Running Club) closest to him.
Barry Atkinson of Knavesmire (42:51) leads Acorn’s Martin Lawn and City of York AC’s Jon Blake in the fledgling vet-60 competition with Mark Thompson (52:48) top for Tadcaster in the vet-70 battle, where Michael McGrath (Postal) and Michael Denner (Knavesmire) also excelled. David I’Anson was the sole vet-80 challenger and recorded a fine 1:01:58 for YKH.
Winter froze out her Selby team-mates Joanna Donnelly and Elizabeth Nairn in the vet-35 class, whose 2024 winner Katie Wise has since moved up a category to claim a first vet-45 victory with her 41:41 to pip fellow Pocklington Runner Fiona Randles and Knavesmire’s Katy Lee.
Julie Mastrolonardo (44:53) struck a blow for City with a vet-55 win from Rachel Dare (Pocklington) and Selby’s Kathleen Coates while Acorn’s Gill Boynton (49:36) kept reigning vet-65 champion Sally Ann Polkey (Tadcaster) and Easingwold’s Philippa Hutton at arm’s length in their section.
The race for team glory has an intriguing look after one round, with Acorn’s men four points clear of 2024 winners Tadcaster while Knavesmire complete the podium. Last year’s triumphant ladies Pocklington will hope to improve in their home race in two weeks’ time after kicking off their defence with a fourth place, as Selby set the pace with 24 points to lead Knavesmire and Acorn.
The league also welcomed a new participating club, Haxby Runners, whose teams were 11th (ladies) and 13th (men) on debut, with Neil Strange their fastest individual in 45:05.
