Charlotte Mason cliched the women’s title outright as the York and District Road Race League concluded at Wistow.

James Tucker won the men’s race to end Jordan Howe’s run of five straight wins, while Becky Penty’s victory on the night ensured Helen Cross could not match Mason at the top of the women’s standings.

Mason (City of York) was already guaranteed a share of the title after picking up two wins and two second places from her best four races, but Cross (York Knavesmire Harriers) could have joined her had she won the final round.

In the end, Knavesmire’s Penty claimed a second successive victory, having also triumphed on her return to the league in the previous round.

With the wind in runners’ favour for much of the first half of the race, the pace was quick from the start and Mason kept Penty in her sights.

But the Knavesmire athlete stayed strong to cross the line in 35:42 to Mason’s 35:54.

Cross finished third in 37:24, with Knavesmire pair Emily Baines (38:18) and Susannah Reid (39:26) plus Pocklington Runners’ Katie Wise (40:05) completing the top six.

As they had done in round four at the Knavesmire, men’s champion Howe (York Postal Harriers) and Tucker (City of York) pushed each other for most of the race.

But this time Tucker was able to make his late surge count and pulled clear to win in 31:45 to Howe’s 31:57.

Tucker’s win also earned him second place in the series, a point ahead of Selby Striders’ Dan Tate, who was third on the night in 33:02.

Tadcaster Harriers’ James Easton (33:10) was fourth, ahead of clubmates Wayne Wetherhill (33:52) and Dan Phillis (34:37).

Penty was also the leading vet 35 woman, ahead of category winner Cross and Wise.

Knavesmire’s Hazel Hall (41:02) completed a clean sweep of vet 45 victories, with Tadcaster’s Joanna Millican (45:39) second and York Acorn’s Julie Lawn (46:23) third.

Tadcaster’s Joanne Derry (46:23) matched Hall’s feat in the vet 55 category, ahead of Acorn’s Gill Boynton (46:59) and Knavesmire’s Vivianne Fraser (47:04).

Tadcaster’s Sally Anne Polkey (50:57) took the vet 65 honours on the night and won the category in the process.

Knavesmire pair Jet Jon Shepherd (51:06) and Mary Farmery (56:24) were second and third.

Already series champion, Tate was again the top vet 40 man, ahead of Eaton and Postal’s Elliott Cole (34:46).

Easingwold’s Simon Donoghue, the vet 50 series champion, took those honours again in 37:31.

Pocklington duo Richard Ginn (37:56) and Graham Justice (38:30) completed the podium.

Easingwold’s Stephan Tomaszewski (39:49) was the leading vet 60 man, collecting his first victory of the series, ahead of City of York’s David Lancaster (41:18) and Knavesmire’s Tim Franklin (43:25).

There was drama in the vet 70 men’s category where Pickering’s Michael Hetherton (47:23) pipped Tadcaster’s William Allan (48:31) to ensure the pair finished joint first in the final standings.

Knavesmire’s Michael McGrath (51:12) was third on the night and in the series.

Already crowned women’s team champions, Knavesmire made it six from six, ahead of Pocklington and City of York.

Likewise, Tadcaster made it six men’s team wins from six, with City of York and Postal completing the podium.
