Dom Carter claimed the men’s York and District Road Race League crown for 2025 with a fourth win from five fixtures on a muggy night on the Bugthorpe hills but Nik Tarrega’s triumph ensured the topsy-turvy battle for the ladies’ title will go down to the wire.

York Postal Harriers frontrunner Carter responded to his narrow defeat by James Eaton on the Knavesmire in the last round of the 10k summer league by clinching a 33:48 victory ahead of York Knavesmire Harriers breakthrough star Joey Wynne and his 34:38 on an undulating course set on the Yorkshire Wolds that 347 runners braved on this occasion.

With athletes’ four best results counting towards their shot at glory, Carter’s four wins cannot be matched even by Eaton, who was not present at Bugthorpe. Third on the podium on Tuesday night after climbing to Acklam and dropping back down at high speed was Knavesmire’s Dave Smithers thanks to a 35:35 that added gloss to his achievement of sealing the veteran-50 trophy last time out.

There is high tension among the female title challengers, however, as Tadcaster Harrier hopeful Tarrega booked her first win of the season with a 39:40 to become the fourth different lady to take gold this summer.

Even though Laura Thompson (39:52) placed second here, the City of York AC contender needs another top-level display in a qualifying fourth race finish to guarantee glory at Wistow on July 8 as the consistent displays of York Acorn Running Club’s Erin Bush have put her firmly in contention heading into the finale. Elizabeth Nairn was third with a 41:13 to lead a victorious Selby Striders team effort.

Tarrega could still snatch the vet-35 prize from leader Emma Winter, with Thompson and Nairn keeping the Selby speedster off the podium this week. Katie Wise jumped into first place in the vet-45 stakes by outpacing Julie Lawn (Acorn) and fellow Pocklington Runner Fiona Randles with her 43:41 and there was more blue-and-white success as Rachel Dare notched her second vet-55 gold of the campaign with a 48:46 ahead of Easingwold Running Club’s Megan Remmer and Deirdre Souch from Acorn.

Gill Boynton cannot be matched in the vet-65 competition despite sitting this one out after four straight wins; it was instead the turn of reigning champion Sally Ann Polkey (Tadcaster) to win from Easingwold duo Philippa Hutton and Sally-Anne Lardner with her tidy 55:55.

Darren Tomlinson will hope Eaton does not appear at Wistow as his first place with a 36:00, ahead of Chris Poulton (Acorn) and Charlie Goodwin (Knavesmire), opened the door to a potential vet-40 coronation. Smithers’ perfect vet-50 campaign continued with a fifth win, with Pocklington pair Stephen Maddison and Richard Ginn keeping him company on the podium.

City’s Stephen Wright is looking to hold off the challenge of Knavesmire’s Barry Atkinson in race six after beating Jon Blake (City) and Dan Jones (Knavesmire) with a 42:15 for the vet-60 top spot.

John Oliver rubber-stamped vet-70 gold for YKH with a 46:43 for win number four to frustrate second-placed rival Mark Thompson (Tadcaster) and Pete Coe from Acorn. If David I’Anson finishes at Wistow, meanwhile, he will defend his vet-80 trophy after taking a third win here.

Tadcaster should wrap up the men’s team prize next time even if a Knavesmire team containing Wynne, Smithers, Cormac Malone, Goodwin, Iain Yates and Richard Purser got the win with 52 points at Bugthorpe. Acorn are not out of it, though, after taking third.

Selby’s ladies have a one-point advantage going into their home race after a super low 21 secured by Nairn, Winter, Joanne Donnelly and Paula Fenteman kept Knavesmire at arm’s length, with a resurgent Pocklington placing a strong third above Acorn.
